Abstract: The exoticism of Madagascar in Songs of Madagascar is a theme which perfectly harmonizes with the specificity of the period when the work was composed; the time of great historic breakthrough and technological inter war, when innovation mixed with simultaneous turn towards the past. The moment of creation explains also its ascetic form, typical for the mature composers, and the specific chamber ensemble. Complete and profound understanding of the performance is possible through deepening knowledge on the island’s exoticism, visualizing a figure of Malagasy girls, the awareness of anticolonial rebellion and the notion of the local customs connected with work and rest. A conscious reference to the primitive sounds such as the djembe drum or mechanical inspirations such as the production line explains characteristic piano structure and original use of instruments. This gives a possibility of decoding things which might not be obvious at first
