Abstract: The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is a time of program music which in a big part was inspired by literature. One of the greatest composer of that time, Arnold Schönberg did not resist this tendency and repeatedly refered to literature in his works. On the road to Hamburg in 1912 he met Richard Dehml, the “demonic”, honest and heroic spirit of his generation. In his poems we can find a whole world, a rhythm of the time, the past, the future and eternity, all of which created an unity in his poetry. The result of the composer’s fascination with the poet’s work is a string sextette Verklärte Nacht which is presently the most often performed work of Arnold Schönberg.
