Abstract: The reviewed book concerns the face concept and facework in Chinese society from an insider’s perspective. The author’s key findings include: (1) Chinese distinguishes between lian and mianzi, both facial concepts. Lian refers to the ability to meet the expectations of one’s social circle, whereas mianzi reflects the balance between self-evaluation and others’ evaluation; (2) the distinction between social reality and the Confucian ideal has caused the separation of the two terms; (3) one needs to care about facial operations as a way of avoiding social conflict.
