Abstract: The article discusses Comenius’s experience in Europe in the context of religious animosity, expulsion of people adhering to different Christian churches and religious support for wars as in the so called “30-years war” in Central Europe or the Swedish-Polish wars. This experience, along with various trends in contemporary scholarship, is seen to have given a powerful impulse to Comenius, who proposed ‘Pansophia’ as a means to rectifying corruptions in science, politics and religion in a universal way. His concepts were systematized in his opus magnum, inviting the ‘Lumina Europae’ to a ‘Universal Consultation on the Amendment of Human Affairs’. The article concludes with a reflection on how the potential uses of Comenius’s legacies in modern thought.
