dc.description.abstract The paper intends to draw a clear line between the meaning of the Polish concept of los and the English meaning of fate. Suitable explications of the words are provided within the framework of Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) and they constitute the basis for all the ensuing investigations concerning the problem. The case study is based on Andrzej Stasiuk’s book, Jadąc do Babadag, and its English translation by Michael Kandel. en
