Abstract: This paper presents a comparative study of two semiotic theories: Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis and polish poet, art critic and theoretician of literature, Tadeusz Peiper’s theory of the poetic equivalence. The main theme of the article is the idea of representation. Both, theory of equi-valence and psychoanalysis represented the same, modern and modernist episteme which constructed new theories in philosophy, science, art and aesthetics. The paper display that both theories were different approaches to the same problem of semiotic representation.
