Abstract: The article investigates animal imagery in Baroque writing, drawing on old compendia and encyclopedias (Kircher, Masen, Chmielowski), as well as poetry. Real and mythological animals constitute an important symbolic element in Baroque cul-ture. Animals fulfil various functions: religious, moral and aesthetic. Knowledge about animals was largely determined by a Baroque cognitive paradigm, which links the me-dieval and the renaissance traditions. Real and mythological animals are the subject matter of detailed and erudite studies for baroque scholars. Animals inspire not only Baroque poets but also painters and priests, and they function as symbols of extra-sensory reality.
